Āvartan: Moments in Rhythm

  • State Theatre Centre of WA, Studio Underground 178 Williams St Perth, 6000 Australia (map)

Presented by Saraswati Mahavidhyalaya

Āvartan is a unique music production that traces the journey of learning Indian classical rhythm — from the first sounds of the drum to the depth and complexity of Hindustani classical music.

The Tabla is a pair of Indian drums known for its rich tonal language, rhythmic depth and expressive ability to converse across different genres of music. This production brings together artists and students of all ages and backgrounds in a powerful exploration of taal, melody, dance and world music improvisation.

Led by Perth-based tabla artist and educator Sivakumar Balakrishnan, Āvartan combines theatre, live performance and collaboration with local artists to invite audiences into the world of tabla as both an instrument and a language of rhythm

From simple bols to intricate rhythmic compositions, Āvartan is a journey through discipline, creativity, tradition and expression — where rhythm becomes music, and music becomes expression.
